CREATING A SAFE SPACE TO TALK ABOUT RACE

OCTOBER 29 • NOVEMBER 4 • NOVEMBER 12 • NOVEMBER 17

We are proud to partner with Kaleidoscope Experience on an upcoming series that will focus on bringing the Waltham community together to discuss race in a safe and inclusive space.

Creating a Safe Space to Talk About Race: a Kaleidoscope Experience is a free 4-part workshop series aimed at helping our community understand race, racism and how together we can work to ensure racial equity for all. Workshops are facilitated by Dishon Mills. Dishon studied Sociology and African American Studies at Harvard University, and has been involved in numerous efforts to promote racial healing.

The topics of the workshops include:

  • Understanding Race: This session looks to define race and discuss whether or not it is a valid way to group people.

  • Why Race Exists: We will explore the origins of race and how it has transformed our society. This workshop will look at the creation of “Whiteness,” “Blackness,” and “Indian” as examples of the construction of race.

  • A World Without Race: This session will discuss systemic injustice and the things that fuel it. We will explore what it would take to undo racial divisions and promote unity.

  • Where Do We Go From Here? Given what we have learned, what are some individual and collective next steps we can employ to systemic injustice in our community? What can we build in its place?

All workshops are two hours each, will take place via Zoom, and are designed to be interactive and conversation-based. Participants are encouraged to attend all 4 workshops, although it is not required.

Conversations will not be recorded. Summaries of previous workshops will be made available online for participants to review before joining a workshop.
